Laser Heating ex-situ
The ex-situ laser heating system at the IMPMC allows the heating of samples up to 5000 K and Mbar pressures inside a diamond anvil cell. This technique can generate the pressure-temperature conditions of the interiors of the Earth and other Jovian planets or set the stage for melting studies or the synthesis of novel materials. The laser heating system of IMPMC offers the possibility to use either double-sided heating with an Nd:YAG laser (well suited for the study of metals or semiconductors), or single-sided CO2 heating (for the study of glasses, minerals, oxides and optically transparent organic matter). The temperature measurement is being performed through spectral radiometry, by collecting the Planck radiation emitted from the sample inside a spectrometer equipped with a CCD.
